Level choice in truncated total least squares

چکیده
The method of truncated total least squares [2] is an alternative to the classical truncated singular value decomposition used for the regularization of ill-conditioned linear systems Ax ≈ b [3]. Truncation methods aim at limiting the contribution of noise or rounding errors by cutting off a certain number of terms in an expansion such as the singular value decomposition. To this end a truncation level k must be carefully chosen. The truncated total least squares solution becomes more significantly dominated by noise or errors when the truncation level k is overestimated than the truncated singular value decomposition solution does. Model selection methods that are often applied in the context of the truncated singular value decomposition can be modified to be applied in the context of the truncated total least squares. The proposed modified generalized cross validation combined with the truncated total least squares method performs better than the classical generalized cross validation [1] combined with the truncated singular value decomposition, especially when both the coefficient matrix A and the right-hand side vector b are contaminated by noise.

Truncated Total Least Squares Method with a Practical Truncation Parameter Choice Scheme for Bioluminescence Tomography Inverse Problem
In bioluminescence tomography (BLT), reconstruction of internal bioluminescent source distribution from the surface optical signals is an ill-posed inverse problem. In real BLT experiment, apart from the measurement noise, the system errors caused by geometry mismatch, numerical discretization, and optical modeling approximations are also inevitable, which may lead to large errors in the recons...
متن کاملWeighted and Two Stage Least Squares Estimation of Semiparametric Censored and Truncated Regressions
This paper provides a root-n consistent, asymptotically normal weighted least squares estimator of the coeecients in the censored or truncated regression model with a xed censoring point. The distribution of the errors is unknown and permits general forms of unknown heteroscedasticity. Also provided is an instrumental variables based two stage least squares estimator for these models, which can...
متن کاملRegularization by Truncated Total Least Squares
The total least squares (TLS) method is a successful method for noise reduction in linear least squares problems in a number of applications. The TLS method is suited to problems in which both the coefficient matrix and the right-hand side are not precisely known. This paper focuses on the use of TLS for solving problems with very ill-conditioned coefficient matrices whose singular values decay...

متن کاملSensitivity and Conditioning of the Truncated Total Least Squares Solution
We present an explicit expression for the condition number of the truncated total least squares (TLS) solution of Ax ≈ b. This expression is obtained using the notion of the Fréchet derivative. We also give upper bounds on the condition number which are simple to compute and interpret. These results generalize those in the literature for the untruncated TLS problem. Numerical experiments demons...
